Chimney Flue Sweep

Many people have the misconception that they only need to have their chimney or wood stove cleaned if they use it to burn wood. The truth is that all heating systems using oil, gas, coal or wood require use of the chimney to remove toxic gasses safely from the home.

The Chimney Safety Institute of America recommends that open masonry fireplaces should be cleaned at ¼” of sooty build-up as this can cause a chimney fire capable of damaging the chimney or spreading to the home. In addition, a chimney obstructed by sooty build-up, debris or animals/nests can result in dangerous carbon monoxide being forced back inside the home.

How Do We Sweep A Chimney?

We prefer to use the Wohler Viper system. This system has a cable that is pushed up the chimney from the bottom. As the cable is snaked up the flue the brush head spins providing the cleaning action. Due to this system having a cable it allows the technicians to work around bends and smaller spaces that the older stiff rods could not reach. All sweeps have a HEPA vacuum running while the cleaning is in progress to ensure all soot particles are contained safely. Drop cloths and booties are also used the ensure cleanliness.

What is a Rodo Strip Sweep?

This is an intensive cleaning involving a rod system with chains and/or wire brush heads. The rods are controlled by a drill which enhances speed for a more aggressive clean. This type of sweep works best with an application of Cre-Away Creosote Modifier powder done prior to visit.

What is Cre-Away Creosote Modifier?

Cre-Away is a four-component powder that safely and effectively modifies glazed or third-degree creosote so that it can be more easily removed by chimney sweeping. First, a reactive agent neutralizes the slightly acidic creosote, making it less corrosive to metal components and less flammable. Second, a dehydrator absorbs the oils and moisture contained in some forms of creosote. Third, a combustion inhibitor helps reduce the chance of chimney fires. Finally, a magnesium catalyst helps break down third degree creosote when the flue is heated by normal use. The catalyst in Cre-Away turns creosote into a char that can be more easily removed. Cre-Away works best when the flue gases are heated to about 600°F (surface stove pipe temperature about 300°F). Apply Cre-Away directly to the flue (not into the fire) using the one-pound applicator bottle.

  • Effective On All Types Of Creosote
  • Helps Prevent Chimney Fires by aiding in the removal of creosote
  • Reduces Creosote Odors
  • Chimneys Clean Easier and More Completely
  • Fast and Easy To Use

Cre-Away can be used to modify third-degree creosote by converting it into a more brittle state that has a different expansion/contraction rate than the flue it is attached to. During heating and cooling cycles, the treated creosote loses its adhesive properties so it can be more easily removed. Creosote and soot build-up in fireplaces or wood stove chimneys can be a fire hazard if it is not properly cleaned and maintained.
